What is Equine Sports Massage Therapy

By: Dr. Gina Tranquillo

Equine Sports massage provides great therapeutic value to any horse’s life. Massage is an effective way to stimulate blood flow, enhance muscle tone, increase range of motion, alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. In addition, it is a great way to improve quality of life for your equine friend.

How is massage performed?
No tools are used other than her two hands. Dr. Tranquillo treats the whole horse since each part of the body affects the other. Her hands do all the work and your horse begins to feel relaxed and pain free as she works through any muscle tension your horse may have.

How long does massage take to perform on one horse?
Dr. Tranquillo states that “most horses take at least one hour, usually a bit longer on their first massage. After that most average about one hour of massage treatment time; however, it really depends on your horse and their condition.”

Why did you get certified in Equine Sports Massage Therapy?
“I wanted a way that I could give back to the horses that have helped me so much as I grew up learning to ride. I wanted to offer a therapy that would make them feel good and offer something they would enjoy. Once I started massaging horses I could see the benefits right away.”

How often does a horse need to get a massage?
“It depends on what your horse’s job is. If you have a high level competition horse, then every 6 weeks is likely ideal. Horses at a less strenuous level, likely every 8 weeks. It depends on what your horse’s history is, the pain level they are having, their exercise requirements, and any underlying condition.”
