As summer continues to march on, the mosquito numbers continue to climb. Although there have been no equine West Nile Virus cases yet confirmed in our practice area, the disease is far from gone. West Nile Virus is spread by mosquitoes to horses and to people. It can cause neurologic disease with death as a potential sequelae. Vaccination in horses is very protective when done properly. Here is an article from last week in the Morning Call discussing West Nile Virus confirmation in a crow in Berks County. http://articles.mcall.com/2013-07-31/news/crow-testing-positive-for-west-nile-virus-in-oley–20130731_1_west-nile-virus-crow-tests-berks-county.
