Equine News – Medications and Diseases
Banamine Shortage
For the foreseeable future Banamine injectable (flunixin meglumine) will not be available at all. Banamine paste is available, and as far as we know it will continue to be. We have a limited stockpile of injectable, but please conserve any banamine that you personally have. We will update you once further information is available.
Fecals
Don’t forget that the fall is time for your routine fecal egg count to help us customize a plan for your individual horse. Be sure that it is a fresh sample or kept on ice until we can pick it up or you can drop it off.
Equioxx Tablets Available soon!
EQUIOXX® (firocoxib) has been the only coxib non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) approved for use in horses. Now, this once-daily treatment to control joint pain and inflammation associated with equine osteoarthritis, is approved by the FDA in tablet form, and will be available in the market early fall.
Recent West Nile Virus Case in the Northeast
A horse in Cayuga County, New York, has died after testing positive for West Nile virus (WNV), the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) reported.
“An unvaccinated 8-year-old stallion was diagnosed with WNV earlier this week,” the EDCC statement said. The EDCC said the owner first noticed clinical signs on July 25. The horse was holding his head in a fixed, low position and developed fever, ataxia (incoordination), and blindness, the statement said. Despite veterinary treatment, the horse’s condition worsened and he was euthanized on July 27. Tests for Eastern equine encephalitis and rabies were negative, the statement said. Be sure your horse is up to date on their West Nile virus vaccine. For the full article from click here on TheHorse.com.
New Leptospirosis Vaccine!
Zoetis announced the introduction of LEPTO EQ INNOVATOR®, the first and only vaccine licensed for use in horses, six months of age or older, to aid in the prevention of leptospirosis caused by Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona, known as L. pomona. A recent study supported by Zoetis showed 75% of healthy horses have been exposed to at least one leptospiral serovar. 69% of horses in Pennsylvania were found to have had exposure to the bacteria. Infections with Leptospira can cause uveitis and abortions. Horses are exposed to the bacteria by coming in contact with infected urine from animals that are shedding the organism. Cows, dogs, skunks, rats, raccoons, opossums, and deer can all be reservoirs for infection. The vaccination has proven to be safe and effective in trials. It has been used in foals as young as 3 months old and in pregnant mares in their second trimester. Some farms may benefit from vaccination against this bacterium. If you have a pregnant mare or want to discuss if your horse is at risk, please see the Zoetis website or contact us to see if vaccination may be for you!
